Horatio STS review Part 3

Horatio(rctech) did it again. Here they are, the inside review of this awesome engine STS D30M and of course onto the indestructible HPI Savage.
I’ve replaced the the melted spur with a new 47t, plastic spur. This time, the slipper nut has been tightened up NO MERCY. I’m assured by SFGAScott that despite this extra tight slipper nut setting, the slipper will still slip enough to absorb any nasty shock loads, whilst avoiding the melted centres that I’m currently experiencing. I should have listened to JFC, as he’s been doing it this way for ages too. [editor: Told ya friend

The Bronze bushing had worn slightly where the spring presses against it. So I turned it around!! The new spur, where the slipper pad adheres to, had a noticeable step in the moulding. As it was were the pad locates, it was obviously going to interfere with the adhesion, so I spun it a drill chuck and filed it true. None of my other spurs have had this problem, so it must just be a 1 off thing. Maybe.
Now that the Engine has been leaned out, the power just keeps improving with each tank. The compression is great, the power delivery is useable and broad, but with a massive mid-range punch that’s very noticeable, even pulling the 13lb Savage around. Bottom end starts strong, mid-range is better than anything else I’ve seen in the flesh and the top end is impressive now, yet alone how it will be as the engine reaches it’s peak. 18/47 is great for this engine. Hearing the STS D .30 rip through 3 gears is awesome! Throttle management is the name of the game. Jam this throttle, and this engine will break things. The limitations now are with a) the driver and b) the drive train.
So now it’s time to spice up the rest of the truck. The new pipe is on the way, chassis plates and mid-tank conversion are all in the pipe-line.
It’s times like these when you truly appreciate why Monster Trucks really do kick ass!! Well done STS, not just for making such an awesome engine, but for making it a realistic choice for those on limited funds.
Expect to see your local track becoming a major hazard really soon – with low flying trucks, powered by STS!!
I’ll post some nice action shots soon!
