Horatio on STS 0702 pipe and Edit Manifold Equipped Savage
What is with STS #0702 Tuned pipe? This pipe is designed for .28 - .30 sized engines, in particular the STS Monster truck engines. [editor: STS D28M and STS30M]
It’s very nicely made and has a nice polished appearance. It comes supplied with a manifold/header pipe, silicon gasket, exhaust spring and coupling springs (between pipe and header).
Unfortunately, the manifold supplied with this pipe does not fit the HPI Savage.

It appears to be suited to Truggies, where the pipe fits down the left side of the engine. Additionally, the shape of the manifold is incorrect for Savage use - it doesn’t fit close enough to the engine to allow clearance for the rear-right Shocks.
My Edit in-line manifold (#ED100227) arrived yesterday and is now fitted to the STS #0702 pipe! It works a treat. The only minor modification needed is to the the exhaust mount wire, to fit the slightly different dimensions of the STS pipe!

The Edit manifold has a nice finish, and fitted very well. However, I noticed a lip that needed to be dremmeled prior to installation. The STS 0702 pipe is very different to the HPI ribbed item. The main thing I noticed was how much more pressure there was to the tank, so much so, I had to lean the main needle by 1/2 a turn! Power delivery is slightly smoother, less explosive and seemingly broader. Fuel consumption is improved yet the top-end seems even better.
Okay, I’ve put the Savage through a good bashing session today. I mean properly thrashed!
Between high speed runs, being chased by a mad dog and catching some air, my Savage was certainly put through it’s paces. 18/47 gearing on the 3 speed certainly gives an impressive top speed with the STS, as well as constant power wheelies. The truck is very responsive in the air with this engine, and I very nearly pulled off an insane back-flip off one of the naturally formed jumps. I endo’ed the landing, but it was mental!
The damage after the day’s antics? Tooth marks on the lower arm and a broken spur!! (Missing teeth this time - no melting issues!).
I also need another gallon of fuel.
The diffs, remarkably, are holding up very well; the brake hub, diff outputs and drive cups etc are worn and need replacing, but to be fair these items already had many gallons through them and still work after a fashion! The old Savage has a new lease of life - it still rocks!
