Horatio comment on the Power of STS D30M rc engine!. Please check his other review at his own Horatio category.

Just ripped through another 47t Plastic spur, so enough is enough. Depending on how I’m using the STS, I can make the plastic spurs last for a while, but as soon as I get aggressive with the throttle, the STS eats them alive. Simply rips the teeth off. Then melts them.

I’ve resorted to using a steel spur and hardened clutchbell. After careful consideration, I decided to use an RW 47t Spur and 18t Hardened clutchbell. It’s a fairly heavy option - BUT - unlike some certain steel spurs, it doesn’t resemble a circular saw!! It’s just as wide as a stock plastic spur, so in theory it should be kinder to the clutch bell and tooth wear should be acceptable. All metal gears go ‘pointy’ eventually, even hardened items on buggies, so it makes sense on the Savage to get the load spread across as wide an area as possible.

The HPI dual brake kit is working after a fashion, but it’s not as effective as the old CNR setup it replaces. The brake hub is lasting well after some serious abuse, but the brakes are not very progressive and have a tendancy to snatch, even after bedding in. In my opinion, the disc rotors are too thin.

The thicker CNR discs were more stable and consistent. Also, the CNR Carbon fibre shoes required no pad material, but still brought everything to a smooth commanding stop.

I mentioned about the wear on the CNR brake hub, well it’s a shame there isn’t some way of combining the best elements of both setups in one product. The larger hex size of the CNR hub would be really nice in a hardened steel item, similar to the smaller HPI size item - just bigger to suit the CNR rotors. Otherwise, all the CNR components are more effective.

I know of MANY circumstances where people had trouble with this motor stripping the spur teeth off, and then when they got steel spur gears they damaged the clutch bell.

This is solved with an aluminum gearbox case, the plastic bends under such great force, and the mesh becomes uncorrect.

After my friends and I have had Aluminum gearboxes, our spur eating problems are solved!

    Thanks for your great reviews.

Thanks for dropping and commenting SaebTheMan.
I for one never replace my original spur because of stripping. I replace to bigger plastic spur because of the overpowered STS engine.

Yes I believe the alum gearbox should do the job too. I just wish we have this on stock at our LHS.

Oh well, using sts engine with this power, is actually no surprise when something end up broken. I use D28M engine though,. Enough to wheelie :D
