Horatio comment on the Power of STS D30M rc engine!. Please check his other review at his own Horatio category.
Just ripped through another 47t Plastic spur, so enough is enough. Depending on how I’m using the STS, I can make the plastic spurs last for a while, but as soon as I get aggressive with the throttle, the STS eats them alive. Simply rips the teeth off. Then melts them.
I’ve resorted to using a steel spur and hardened clutchbell. After careful consideration, I decided to use an RW 47t Spur and 18t Hardened clutchbell. It’s a fairly heavy option - BUT - unlike some certain steel spurs, it doesn’t resemble a circular saw!! It’s just as wide as a stock plastic spur, so in theory it should be kinder to the clutch bell and tooth wear should be acceptable. All metal gears go ‘pointy’ eventually, even hardened items on buggies, so it makes sense on the Savage to get the load spread across as wide an area as possible.
The HPI dual brake kit is working after a fashion, but it’s not as effective as the old CNR setup it replaces. The brake hub is lasting well after some serious abuse, but the brakes are not very progressive and have a tendancy to snatch, even after bedding in. In my opinion, the disc rotors are too thin.
The thicker CNR discs were more stable and consistent. Also, the CNR Carbon fibre shoes required no pad material, but still brought everything to a smooth commanding stop.
I mentioned about the wear on the CNR brake hub, well it’s a shame there isn’t some way of combining the best elements of both setups in one product. The larger hex size of the CNR hub would be really nice in a hardened steel item, similar to the smaller HPI size item - just bigger to suit the CNR rotors. Otherwise, all the CNR components are more effective.

HPI released a Tuned Pipe for the Baja 5B. Woohoo!! And it is also cheaper then other pipes (coming in at 130 dollars on HPI’s site, 99.99 on Tower) For more power and noise, it also fits nicely inside the Baja through the roll cage.

Yes, you read that correctly. its the HPI Savage with 10 seaters. I was browsing for good story and i end at this great site. But it is NOT the 1/8 scale we used to drive. its more to 2:1. Hahaha. Its the real Monster truck brought to you by Extreme team Ride Dot com. The company belongs Mac and Liz Plecker at Williamson Georgia. The HPI Savage is actually a 10 seaters F-150 monster ride truck. thanks there mate.

Well I started out with a Savage X kit I got this year in June. It was good and all but I knew I would fall into the money pit called the Savage. So I slowly started upgrading her, and well here is my project story.
This is what is looked like before I got all the parts:

First major thing I got for my Savage was an STS 28, I have heard good and bad things about this motor but I got it and I wanted to see the hidden power in this beast:

The next thing I got was Aluminum Diff Cups, Diff Cases and Bulkheads, and CVDs, HD Wheel Dogbones, HD Drive Cups all round:

Then I encountered a problem which was that the Savage X shock towers didn’t work which I knew but I had to modify them:

Then you get this:

Then the next thing I got which means alot to me where Twisted Toys LCG Stock Length TVPs:

Then I bought some goodies for a Mid-Tank Mod, I already had some stuuf for this before I just needed a few more things:

Then I put it all together and this is what it looked like after:

Wow I have spent alot of money already but there is still one more important thing I need, clutch shoes. So I ordered me some Nova Adjustable Clutch Shoes:

Now my Savage was complete and I could drive it. Presently and about half a gallon or so later she looks like this, and let me tell you this motor has alot of friggin’ power:

If you have any questions of what I did just message me here and I will get back to you ASAP. Tell me what you guys think also. The only damage that has came due to this is a broken flywheel and a output dogbone. Thanks for looking.

Check the top speed - not bad for a 2 year old S 25 engine!!
Note: no wheelies in this video because the clutch needed a service and I was running 18/49 gearing.

The HPI Savage Throttle Ofna mod by Horatio(rctech) quoted here:
The OFNA throttle mod is the Savage equivelent to a 1/8th buggy throttle linkage. Of course you don’t need seperate front/rear brake linkages on the Savage (the Savage has only a central brake and no centre diff), but you can enjoy all the other benefits of a greater adjustibility, better mechanical advantage and a stiffer servo horn/control arm, thus creating a more responsive throttle action and stronger, posititive brakes.
