Here’s some review of Werks Offroad Tires which we had been testing out these few months. These tires comes with 2 types of compounds which is R200 for soft and R300 for medium. Me and my other drivers just fell in love with them first hand because of it’s traction and forward bites. To me, it’s comparable to those top tires brand around if not better as I’ve tried few of them before this.

To be more precise, I’ll start with the Werks “lugs” which is very suitable for most tracks with hard packed conditions (that’s what it says) but I found out that it’s also suitable for medium packed track as well. It’s actually an all around tire. I would prefer the R200 soft compound as it absorbs more bumps on uneven areas on the track thus giving the buggy more stability during sharp turns and jumps by minimising bounce which normally are depended solely on shocks and the weight of the shock oils. Not to say that we no longer depend on the shocks to absorb the bumps but as a compliment to further enhance the stability of the buggy. Some expert says that the compounds wears off real fast but after 2 full races, I still find that the tire are pretty much the same with minimal wear (and it’s very minimal), maybe Im not a hard driver, hehe. Furthermore, you’ll be surprise on the compound’s flexibility as it’s produced with natural rubber instead of 100% synthetics. I’ve trim off the pins in the center row of the tire’s pin designs (which a GS factory driver recommends me) and I found out that it’s more responsive in turns (you may try this but it’s not a guaranteed performance thing as it’s dependable on your driving style). Well, let’s turn to the other design now….

“W’s” is another great tire that came from Werks Racing and Im more fond of these than lugs. Maybe it gives me the option of choosing between forward bite and/or braking ability as this tire is directional. I’ve tried using a direction for forward bite on the front wheel and braking ability on the rear (on which direction the “W” faces) and found it very attractive on my driving. Im also very much into R200 soft compound and as I’ve mentioned, helped a lot on those uneven areas in a track and lessen the “bounce” on my buggy during small and huge jumps that will sometimes affect the manueverability of the buggy upon acceleration on landings. From the 2, I would prefer the “w’s” but both are as good in quality and tractions. Most of the other drivers in my group just love’em and gave up on their previous tires. Factory says that the “w’s” are suitable for loamy tracks but I found that it’s suitable for dry track as well. Well, best on both worlds I guess.

I would recommend that you guys try out the “w’s” if not both and I can assure you, you’ll be amaze. Im amaze myself as it improves the manuverability of my buggy thus improving my lap times with lesser mistakes in jumps and faster in and out of turns. I’ve also tried using the lugs on my front wheel and “w’s” at the rear at a recent local race and Wow….the traction in front for corners and brakings at the rear and Im pretty surprised at the pace Im going.

By the way, the inserts used at this moment is normal foam and will be replaced with orange coloured moulded inserts in 2007. Anyway, the “w’s” ran out of stock as of now but the shipment will come in soon. The RRP is RM65 per pair with inserts and feel free to contact me (019-382 0260) or Terrence (012-327 8870) for further info.

P/s: I’ve also punched holes on the inner of the rims to make it softer on landing impacts. Just an enhancement idea if ever you think it’s not soft enough as the tires doesn’t come with holes molded in them.

At last, another of my favourite review. A personal racer review and non-subsidized one. I started racing truggy because of GS Racing SUT and it is really suitable that i provide you all with the latest review on XUT from GS Racing. Marty Korn sure loves to hear this. Here from a friend, Spencer.

More Pictures and review…

Jon, Im still not to that level yet to give you any good reviews but surely I can provide you with some PEERSONAL OPINIONS about this wonderful truggy … As we know, the XUT is derived from the better known CL1 so, most option parts like the front and back lower arm mounts, chassis brace (though shorter, but the XUT chassis has holes drilled for it), front top arm mount and etc can be used on it. The down side of this truggy is the screws used which are mostly phillip screws (that can easily strip with the wrong phillip drivers) which I recommend to be changed later on. I used the side chassis protector of the CL1 on this truggy as it doesn’t come with one.

Technical wise, well I can say it’s definitely lighter than the SUT (never weight it but surely it feels lighter), and material usage is definitely better and more durable after the extreme test at the race compare to my previous sut. I changed the chasis brace to CL1′s before the race and it makes the chasis a little more flexible (original braces are longer) thus giving it a little flex on rough landings.

Performance wise, well like I said before it handles very well over bumps with the longer arms which makes it more stable. Steering wise, it very responsive maybe due to the long arms and you might want a steady hands on the straights, turn a little too much and you’re heading offtrack but it compensates the “s” corners and corner exits very well. You can definitely tune down on the responsiveness with the steering link position on the steering brace. The original tires are not giving much traction though and I change it to proline to get that. Im using a combination of 5000, 7000, 1000 diff oils on this monster and it’s kinda smooth all round and doesn’t seem to “rush around” everywhere so, it seems like going slow but comparing it with my buggy lap times, it’s comparable (compared to my own lap times, you can make it faster). I will try heavier diff oils later on to see how it goes. Im using GS 45wt for the front shocks and 35wt for the rear with GS orange coloured springs. Well, I liked the softer feel of it as it lands and absorbing the rough surface at some of the corners well. Not sure about you guys on this Did not see much traction roll though on this beauty but smoothness all the way Jumps and lands well over bumps compared to the SUT maybe because of its weight and lower CG. By the way, Im using aluminium clutch shoes

To sum this, it’s an oversized CL1 with ultra steering response, precise handling and stability everywhere plus durability and great design. Beauty IN the Beast! Oh, and you can add in a wheelhub adapter to have an even wider wheelbase but I think the original ia already precise and handles very well

Well Jon, hope this helps…hehe. Gotta tune it up further. Now it’s very much standard with little extra parts
